Ricky Burns Vs Roman Martinez At Kelvin Hall, Glasgow 4th September

Ricky Burns will at long last get his chance with Puerto Rico’s WBO super-featherweight champ Roman Martinez.

Subsequent to weeks of work between the two camps, the Commonwealth champion coming from Coatbridge will meet the unbeaten Martinez in Glasgow on 4 September.

During a media conference which will announce the Kelvin Hall event Burns, 27, mentioned: “This has been dragging on a bit.

“It is the biggest fight of my career, but I’m more than confident that I can beat him.”

The Scot has been installed as mandatory challenger late last year, with the fight signed for the champion’s homeland.

I have 10 weeks’ solid training ahead of me, more than enough to prepare for this fight

“At the start, it was meant to be in Puerto Rico, then it was here and then there were a few dates that all fell though,” explained Burns.

“I was originally training to fight on the 17 July, but obviously it was moved forward. But the date is set now and I have something to train for.

“I have 10 weeks solid training ahead of me, more than enough to prepare for this fight.”

On the same bill, Greenock man John Simpson is likely to fight for his Commonwealth featherweight title against English rival Stephen Smith plus Edinburgh super-featherweight Paul Appleby returns to the ring after having a year’s absence, with his adversary yet to be declared.

Martinez, additionally 27, who won the title from Essex fighter Nicky Cook in Manchester in March this past year, has since won two defences on home land with knockouts of Feider Viloria and Gonzalo Munguia.

With all the delays for this proposed fight Burns has fought just once since last June, beating Youssef Al Hamidi on points in a non-title bout on 15 May.

Froch Vs Taylor Set To Happen In April

Britain’s Carl Froch is set to defend his WBC super-middleweight title against Jermain Taylor in Connecticut in April. The 31-year-old from Nottingham willtake on the former Middleweight champion on 25 April at Mashantucket, Connecticut. The bout was announced by Taylor’s publicist, Norman Horton, on Saturday 28th Feb after lengthy negotiations between the two boxers camps.Froch won the title last December by beating Canada’s Jean Pascal in one of the British fights of the year. Since then, a fight against mandatory challenger Taylor had been on the cards. Although there has been rumors circlulating that Taylor’s paymaster were unsure of weather to take on Froch following his impressive display over Pascal.

Taylor lost his Middleweight title to Kelly Pavlik in February last year, and then lost a rematch at a catch weight. Since then he won a unanimous decision over a now faded version of Jeff Lacy in November.

David Haye & Audley Harrison Admit To Fight Talks

The manager of WBA title-holder David Haye has affirmed he’s spoken with Audley Harrison’s team regarding a all-British heavyweight showdown in 2010.

Although Adam Booth contends Harrison is just one of six probable competitors and states absolutely no contract discussions happened.

Harrison had also stated talks have been under way with the Klitschko bros.

However the Ukrainians’ manager Bernd Boente told the BBC that there was absolutely no talks and forecasted Haye would consider the “easy option” and match up against Harrison.

Harrison, 38, has vacated the European crown that he picked up with a last-gasp knockout of Michael Sprott on April and the Olympic super-heavyweight champ from 2000 states he’ll be able to fight in October, having recovered from the torn pectoral muscle tissue.

Vitali Klitschko, 38, holds the WBC title whilst the brother Wladimir, 34, holds the IBF and WBO belts – and expectancy has increased over a likely meeting for either brother with 29-year-old Haye.

“David Haye is a false prophet. One punch and that chin will shatter like glass,” said Harrison.

“If I was him I’d keep running from the Klitschkos and keep beating up on shop-worn American heavyweights.

“I’m told by my promoters that both David Haye and the Klitschko brothers have expressed an interest in facing me when I return after rehab.

“If it’s either Klitschko brother the task will be hard, but that’s how I want it. I respect both brothers as they are effective at what they do but both can be beat.

“Whatever the route I will find a way to fulfil my destiny and become heavyweight champion of the world.”

Vitali Klitschko laboured to a 10th-round knockout with Poland’s Albert Sosnowski in the very last fight last month.

Sosnowski had the European title before Harrison and was scheduled to battle the Londoner in April but chosen a battle with Klitschko instead.

In the mean time, Wladimir Klitschko was timetabled to fight Haye last year, only for the Brit to withdraw with the back injuries.

Haye went on to fight Nikolay Valuev for that WBA belt as an alternative, outpointing the huge Russian in Nuremburg previous November.

Boente told the BBC that either of the brothers would prefer to fight Haye, but accused the Briton of “running scared”.

We have not discussed for one minute a fight with Audley Harrison

The Klitschko brothers’ manager Bernd Boente

“He’s always challenging the Klitschko brothers but since Vitali challenged him we haven’t heard from him. My feeling is that he’s afraid,” said Boente.

“We have not discussed for one minute a fight with Audley Harrison and at the moment it would not make much sense, it’s not up for discussion. I think he wants to bring that to Haye’s people.”

Haye knocked out former world champion John Ruiz in nine rounds in April, since when he has been non-committal about his future.

Harrison’s promoter Eddie Hearn has no doubts as to what Haye’s next move should be, calling a match between the two Londoners potentially “the biggest the UK has ever seen”.

“Everyone wants to fight Audley because they know what he brings to the table,” added Hearn, the son of veteran sports promoter Barry.

“He will be installed as the mandatory challenger for the European title but we are also in discussions with the Klitchkos and David Haye and Adam Booth regarding a world title shot later this year.

“Audley’s last two appearances in the UK have attracted record viewing figures, so couple that with Haye’s popularity and the fight is huge.”

Ever since winning gold at the Sydney Olympics, Harrison’s professional career has been a whirlwind affair and before his success over Sprott in April he had never been in ownership of a recognised title.

The career appeared all but over prior to his sucess in Barry Hearn’s Prizefighter heavyweight tournament last October and he was behind on points against Sprott before producing a spectacular left hook in the last round.

And while Eddie Hearn may be overstating things when he says a match between Haye and Harrison, who used to be close friends, is potentially the biggest in British history, it would certainly appeal to many boxing fans.

Haye Offers To Fight Klitschko In Germany

David Haye has offered to fight WBO and IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in Germany after prospects of the bout taking place in a large London venue faded.

Haye’s camp seemed close to agreeing a deal for a June bout in London but the fight itself could now be in doubt unless an agreement is found quickly.

Haye wants the fight so much that he has stated he will travel to Klitschko’s backyard for it. “David will fight Wladimir anywhere they choose,” the 28-year-old’s trainer and manager Adam Booth said.

Klitschko, 32, who is based in Germany, boasts 52 wins in 55 bouts. His last success came on 13 December when the referee stopped American Hasim Rahman’s punishment in the seventh round. Since moving up from Crusierweight Haye has been determined for a showdown with one of the Klitschko brother, has he has stated he only wants to fight the best in the division.

Boxer Antonio Margarito Banned For A Year

Former WBA welterweight champion Antonio Margarito has had his licence revoked for one year by the California State Athletic Commission. Margarito and trainer Javier Capetillo have been banned for putting a plaster-like substance under Margarito’s hand wraps for his fight with Shane Mosley – which Margarito lost after being stopped . The pads, confiscated last week, are still being tested by the commission. Mexican Margarito lost his WBA welterweight title to Mosley in January via a ninth-round technical knock-out. The California State Athletic Commission voted 7-0 to revoke both Margarito and Capetillo’s boxing licences. This is a sudenly fall from grace for the all action fighter from Mexico following his epic battle ands knock out of then unbeaten Cotto last year.

Khan Earns 5th Round Technical Decision Over Barrera

Amir Khan overcame Mexican legend Marco Antonio Barrera by a technical decison in the fifth round after the fight was stopped following a accidental clashh of heads in the 1st round

Khan, who is hoping for a shot at the WBO lightweight world title, had the upper-hand from the beginning after an accidental collision left Barrera covered in blood and clearly hampered. However, the 35-year-old Mexican, a seven times world champion at three weights, fought on bravely at Manchester’s MEN Arena against the younger, faster and sharper Khan.

The 22-year-old from Bolton, who suffered a small cut to the left eye, was fighting for redemption after his loss at the hands of Breidis Prescott six months ago in the same ring and it is fair to say the Olympic silver medallist is back with a bang. The pressure was always on Barrera as Khan used a succession of fast jabs, along with hook combinations, to keep him on the defence, but at no point did Barrera look troubled.

Throughout the fight Khan appeared to be too fast and too quick footed for the 35 Barrera, even without the cut – Barrea would have struggled to cope with hand speed shown by Khan in the 5 rounds that the fight lasted. Teaming up with Roach has undoubted improved Khan as a fight and helped to gaurd against his “glass Jaw” by working on his defensive still. Khan promoter – Frank Warren has now said that he will look to secure Khan a world title shot by the end of the year.

While having Barrera’s name on your CV is impressive, fan of Khan should not get too carried away. Barrera is 35 and fought for most of his career at the lower weight, while Barrera was unable to test Khan – because he could not catch up with. We still need to know if Khan and aviod and take the puches of a fully blown Lightweight.

Munroe Retains European Title On Points

Rendall Munroe retained his European super-bantamweight title for the fourth time with a impressive unanimous decision over Kiko Martinez at the Barnsley Metrodome. Spain’s Martinez was out for revenge, having lost his crown to the Leicester southpaw a year ago in Nottingham. He started strongly and inflicted a cut over his opponent’s left eye but Munroe gradually took control and was well ahead on all three judges’ scorecards. He finished with a flourish to seal 116-112, 116-113 and 118-110 margins. Munroe, 28, had won his crown by a majority decision over Martinez and had clearly learned much in his three subsequent fights.

Two big shots from the heavy punching Spaniard in the first round suggested he would be up against it but Munroe regrouped superbly. Munroe continued to step up the pace down the stretch, finishing with two big rounds as his opponent sagged in the ropes. Following this impressive win, Munroe could soon be in line for a crack at a version of the “World Title”. Though Frank Mahoney – Munroe’s manager has suggested he will only put him in for a world title when he knows he can win one. At dig at rival Brian Peter putting Bernard Dunne in for a WBA title tilt against Ricardo Cordoba. Dunne was stopped in 1 round back in 2007 my Martinez.

Miguel Cotto Stops Jennings In 5 To Take Vacant WBO Title

Miguel Cotto stopped Britain’s Michael Jennings in the fifth round at New York’s Madison Square Garden to claim the vacant WBO title. The Puerto Rican made a slow start but took control of the bout in the second round with a barrage of body shots. The guld in class was evident with Jennings only every having fought at British domestic level, while Cotto has mixed it with some of the best fighters of his era.Jennings was knocked down twice in the fourth round, first with a body shot and then with a sweeping left hook. The former British champion bravely fought on but the fight was stopped after he went down for a third time. It had been a one-sided bout in front of a partisan crowd in New York, with Jennings only ever throwing an occasional jab and Cotto was able to pick him of at will. Jennings never really had the power in his right hand to earn Cotto’s respect – a shot that Margarito was able to use with devasting effect in Cotto’s only previous lose.
Marks had begun to appear on Jennings’ face by the beging of the fourth round and he caught a straight left on the nose at the start of that round which was the beginning of the end. Jennings, 31, was still trying to trade blows in the fifth but he was sent on to the ropes with a crunching right to the head, followed by another big left.

A straight right to the head then left a bloodied Jennings down on one knee and he looked across to his trainer Brian Hughes, who calmly motioned for him to stand up. But referee Benji Estevez had seen enough and called the fight off. After the fight Cotto stated his desire to face the winner of the Pacqciao Hatton fight set for the 2nd of May.
